Myths About Diabetes

A myth is a widely held belief/idea that is false. Many myths exist about all sorts of things. According to the American Diabetes Association, there are also many myths regarding diabetes.

Just to name a few:

  • Myth #1:  If you are overweight, you will eventually develop type 2 diabetes
    Fact:  are many risk factors for developing this disease and being overweight is one of them. There are things such as family history, ethnicity, etc that also impact this. Many people with type 2 diabetes are at a normal weight or slightly overweight.
  • Myth #2:  Too much sugar cases diabetes
    Fact: Although being overweight does increase your risk for developing diabetes, a high caloric intake impacts weight gain. Sugary foods tend to have higher calorie levels and research shows that drinks high in sugar are linked to diabetes. It is recommended that you avoid intake of sweetened beverages such as: soda, energy/sports drink, sweet tea, just to name a few.
  • Myth #3: Diabetics should eat special diabetic foods
    FactThe reality is that health meal plans for people without diabetes and people with diabetes are generally the same. A healthy meal plan should be low in saturated fat, moderate salt/sugar and lean protein, with healthy fats and fruits.
