Emergency Dental Care What to Expect

Dental emergencies like a knocked-out tooth or broken crown should not be ignored and addressed as quickly as possible to avoid permanent or costly damage. Common dental emergencies are:

  • Knocked Out Tooth If possible, retrieve the tooth, holding it by the crown (the part that is usually exposed in the mouth). Lightly rinse the tooth in water to remove any dirt, but do not scrub or remove attached tissue fragments. It is best to store the tooth in your own saliva or milk. Knocked-out teeth have the best chance of survival if they are returned to the socket with in one hour of being knocked out.
  • Lost Filling or Broken Crown – A broken crown or lost filling can be very uncomfortable. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers to ease any discomfort. If you have the crown or filling, bring it with you to the dentist. Do not attempt to reattach or glue the filling or crown.
  • Toothache – Tooth pain can be caused by many things. Some tooth pain does not require treatment. If the ache/pain persists, please call the office for an appointment.
  • Abscess – A tooth abscess is a serious condition that can worsen with time and spread the infection to the rest of your body if left untreated. Call us immediately for treatment. To ease discomfort, you may rinse with a mild saltwater solution.
